How to Play PokéSurvivor and Start Strong
Keep a working attack selected and leave yourself an escape route. This PokéSurvivor guide helps you make the decisions that keep both available, from choosing level-up cards to preparing for legendary rifts. Use this PokéSurvivor guide to understand how combat works: your partner automatically attacks with the selected move.
PokéSurvivor is a free browser survival game with automatic attacks, experience pickups, and permanent upgrades. Its roster includes 966 playable Pokémon across nine regions, from Kanto through Paldea.
Play PokéSurvivor in your browser on PC, phone, or tablet. Mobile play uses landscape orientation, and you can optionally add the game to your home screen.
Learn movement and move switching
| Action | PC controls | Phone or tablet controls |
|---|---|---|
| Move | WASD or arrow keys | Touch anywhere and drag |
| Select a move | 1–4 or click its icon | Tap its icon |
| Cycle moves | Q/E | Tap the desired move |
| Pause | Esc | Top-right pause button |
Your partner automatically attacks with the selected move. Concentrate on positioning, dodging projectiles, and collecting experience rather than pressing an attack button.
The opening personality quiz suggests a partner, but you can choose another. Regional starters are available alongside Psyduck and Slowpoke. Pick a starting move you can comfortably use while moving.
Create an account if you want lasting progress. Accounts support cloud saves across devices; guest play does not save progress. If you use a password account, link your Gmail through the account prompt so you can recover access through Google sign-in.
Your Opening Run: Collect XP and Fix Immediate Problems
The opening goal in this PokéSurvivor guide is straightforward: turn nearby enemies into collected experience without sacrificing your escape route.

Defeated enemies leave XP orbs behind. Walking past a pile without collecting it leaves that experience unused, even if you cleared the enemies successfully.
- Check your active move. Confirm that your partner is using the attack you intend.
- Draw enemies into a broad loop. Move in wide circles to stretch the horde behind you.
- Collect through cleared space. Return through openings instead of cutting across incoming enemies.
- Strengthen what already works. Upgrade your main attack before dividing your picks among several underleveled moves.
- Prepare for the boss. The first regular boss is scheduled at 3:00; preserve health and maneuvering room before it arrives.
Each level-up offers three cards. The options can include new moves, upgrades to learned moves, stat boosts, and eligible evolutions.
Choose cards for the problem on screen
| Current problem | Consider this pick or action | What it addresses |
|---|---|---|
| Your active attack struggles to clear enemies | Upgrade that move or take Attack | Improves the damage you are currently using |
| Enemies repeatedly catch you | Take Speed and reroute | Helps create movement space |
| Your health is dangerously low | Choose Heal | Restores about 45% of your HP immediately |
| XP remains scattered behind you | Take Magnet or circle through cleared ground | Helps collect experience |
| A maxed move has not evolved | Take its required stat card | Completes an evolution requirement |
Avoid forcing another move simply because a slot is empty. Extra slots provide alternatives; they do not automatically add simultaneous damage.
Watch your experience bar when switching attacks with number keys. Those keys also select level-up rewards, so release them when the card screen appears and read before choosing.
Move Evolutions and Bonds: Build Around One Reliable Attack
Move progression is central to this PokéSurvivor guide. The game has 64 moves, and 59 have evolutions. Evolving an attack changes its behavior as well as its power: Ember becomes Fire Blast, while Bubble becomes Surf.
How to evolve a move
Follow the evolution sequence in this PokéSurvivor guide:
- Learn the move during the run.
- Upgrade it to its maximum level, level 5.
- Take the specific stat card that move requires during the same run.
- Select the gold evolution card when it appears among your level-up choices.
Evolution requires a selection; reaching maximum level does not transform the move automatically. Permanent upgrades and held-item bonuses do not replace the required run-specific stat card.
Keep taking useful cards while waiting for an evolution. Level-up offers come from a weighted pool, so a particular card is not guaranteed at a particular level.
Check your active move after learning another
Learning a new move immediately makes it active. That can leave you using a short-range attack or a nondamaging buff when you expected projectiles.
Check the HUD after every new move. Switch back before moving into danger if the new option does not suit the enemies ahead.
Buff moves also require attention. Swords Dance builds attack while active, which means selecting it temporarily replaces your normal offensive move. Activate buffs only when you have room, then return to damage.
Use Bonds to fire moves together
Bonds let joined moves fire together while occupying one slot. Defeating a rift legendary grants a Bond opportunity.
Pair a dependable offensive move with a compatible buff or utility move when both are available. Combining an attack with Swords Dance, for example, lets the joined slot attack while building the buff.
Keep the distinction clear: evolution transforms a move; a Bond joins moves. Plan your early survival around the attack you already have rather than depending on a rift appearing.
Combat Tips: Types, Weather, and Enemy Priorities
This PokéSurvivor guide treats movement and matchups as connected decisions. Switching to a stronger matchup can help clear an exit, but getting trapped while switching still ends the run.
PokéSurvivor softens the familiar Pokémon type chart:
- Super-effective attacks deal ×1.6 damage.
- Resisted attacks deal ×0.6 damage.
- Traditional immunities become ×0.3 damage.
- Dual-type modifiers multiply, with increased damage capped at ×2.4.
These rules apply to outgoing and incoming attacks. Your partner’s defensive typing matters alongside the type of its active move.
Switch attacks when your current move is heavily resisted and you have a developed alternative. Compare its actual upgrade level, too; a favorable type does not erase the difference between a strong evolved attack and a newly learned move.
Adjust to the weather
| Weather | Type effects |
|---|---|
| Rain | Strengthens Water and weakens Fire |
| Harsh sunlight | Strengthens Fire and weakens Water |
| Sandstorm | Boosts Rock, Ground, and Steel; other types suffer |
| Snowfall | Boosts Ice; other types suffer and slow down |
| Fog | Boosts Ghost, Fairy, and Psychic |
Recheck your active move when weather changes. During snowfall, give yourself extra room to turn and escape.
Remove support enemies and respect attack warnings
Some enemies heal nearby Pokémon, provide shields, summon reinforcements, explode, or launch telegraphed beams.
Prioritize healers and shield-casters when you can reach them safely. Attacking a supported crowd while leaving its support untouched prolongs the fight and fills your route with surviving enemies.
Ground circles and filling lines warn that attacks are about to land. Step outside them immediately, then resume collecting drops.
Against bosses, keep watching the battlefield around the target. Clear nearby threats when they obstruct your route, and avoid squeezing between terrain and the boss merely to maintain damage.
Held Items: Read the Tradeoff Before Swapping
You can find held items in chests and from defeated bosses. Only one can be equipped at a time, and it lasts for the run.
Use this PokéSurvivor guide’s item checklist before replacing what you already hold:
| Item | Effect |
|---|---|
| Leftovers | Recovers 1.5% of your HP per second |
| Choice Band | Adds 40% damage but prevents move switching |
| Quick Claw | Reduces cooldown on all moves by 20% |
| Focus Sash | Leaves you at 1 HP after a lethal hit, available every 60 seconds |
| Shell Bell | Heals you through damage dealt |
| Amulet Coin | Adds 50% PokéCoins at settlement |
| Lucky Egg | Adds 30% experience |
| Life Orb | Adds 30% damage but costs some HP per attack |
| Choice Scarf | Adds 35% speed |
| Rocky Helmet | Damages enemies that hit you in melee |
| Assault Vest | Provides 20% damage reduction |
Read Choice Band especially carefully. Take it only when you intend to stay on a functioning offensive move or joined slot; its switching restriction can interfere with a build that regularly changes attacks.
Check your health before equipping Life Orb. Its offensive bonus comes with ongoing HP expenditure.
For locked chests, clear nearby threats before standing beside them to open them. Abandon the attempt if enemies close your exit. A chest is an opportunity, not a reason to accept a fatal hit.
Rifts, Collection, and Permanent Progression
Rifts transport you into legendary encounters across 18 arenas, one for each type. The legendary roster contains 87 Pokémon.
Dual-type legendaries randomly use one of their types for the arena. Terrain adds another challenge: lava burns, ice is slippery, and water slows movement.
Check your health, active attack, and movement options before entering. Winning awards a ×10 gacha ticket; losing returns you to the map without that reward. Defeating a legendary records the defeat but does not automatically unlock it as a playable partner.
Keep coins, tickets, and collection goals separate
| Goal | How to progress |
|---|---|
| Strengthen a favorite partner | Spend PokéCoins on that Pokémon’s permanent upgrades |
| Unlock regional Pokémon | Spend earned tickets on the appropriate regional gacha |
| Earn a rift reward | Defeat the legendary encounter |
| Collect a wild shiny | Defeat the sparkling shiny Pokémon |
| Add achievement rewards | Complete milestones for tickets, coins, medals, and some titles |
Permanent upgrades belong to individual Pokémon. Concentrate your early spending on a partner you enjoy, then expand when you want to develop another.
Tickets come from gameplay rather than purchases. Regular enemies occasionally drop them, and bosses can also provide tickets.
Wild Pokémon have a 1 in 4,096 shiny chance per spawn. Gacha pulls have a 1 in 100 shiny chance, and duplicate shinies award triple PokéCoins. After unlocking a shiny form, select it in your collection to use it.
As of October 14, 2026, there are 130 achievements, covering collection, survival, combat, rifts, legendary defeats, and missions. Pair ongoing achievement goals with daily and weekly missions.
Coordinate co-op before the run gets crowded
Online rooms support up to four players. Add friends by nickname, invite them into a room, and start together. Experience is shared, and standing beside a downed teammate revives them.
Clear threats before attempting a revive. In group play, the game continues while your pause menu is open, so communicate before stopping to read menus or make choices.
FAQ
What should beginners prioritize in a PokéSurvivor guide?
Prioritize movement, collected XP, and upgrades to your active attack. Check the HUD after learning moves, leave ground attack markers promptly, and prepare health and space before the first boss at 3:00.
Is PokéSurvivor free, and do I need a download?
Yes. It runs in your browser without ads or purchases. Optional donations support operating costs and provide no gameplay advantage. You can also add it to your home screen.
Why won’t my move evolve at level 5?
It also needs its specific stat card taken during the current run. Once both requirements are met, select the gold evolution card when offered.
How do I save progress and play across devices?
Sign in with a username-and-password account or Google. Account progress saves in the cloud and supports continuing on another device. Guest progress is not saved.
